Wenslaff Winning Wonder Kids!

By Collette Wood

For the past two years, the Boys & Girls Club of Desert Hot Springs has conducted ceramics classes at their after-school program at Edward Wenzlaff Elementary School.
“It has been one of the most exciting classes of the after-school programs that we have,” said Unit Director, K Mayo.
There is plenty of reason for joy. “Last year, our kiln broke down just as the festival was about to open and we could only submit one piece,” said Fran DeAngelis, the ceramics teacher. “That one submission won 1st place.” This year, the youth in the Ceramics class entered 12 of their art pieces into the Riverside County Date Festival Junior Exhibit. Eleven of the submissions won 1st place Blue Ribbons, and the 12th submission took a second place Blue Ribbon, even though broken.
Winners include Rochelle Birmingham, (5th grade) Cassie Hemphill, (5th grade) Toma Kravtsova, (5th grade), Yesenia Montez de Oca, (5th grade) Brenda Jimenez, (5th grade) Noel Gamboa (4th grade), Salem Lehr, (3rd grade) Dominique Rios, (3rd grade) Devon Rios, (2nd grade) Sammy Johnson, (Kindergarten) and Sarah Ayala, (1st grade). The 2nd place winner was first grader, Julia Johnson.
