I
have been drawing my style of cartoons and caricatures for many years.
My schooling took place on the kitchen table, after school and into the wee hours of the night. Raised in a happy, country atmosphere by a loving family which lacked the
financial where-with-all to afford the formal training I might have had, I did the next best thing... I studied comic book styles, children's illustrations, and
magazine cartoon styles of the artists who were popular when I was a boy. Although I saw many innovative techniques devised by these artists, I seldom cared for the comic book stories; it was the
variation of drawing styles that intrigued me. Those cartoonists whose styles have made a lasting impression on me and which I think is reflected in my artwork, were legends such as, Walt
Disney, Al Capp, Walt Kelly, Walter Lantz, Hank Ketcham, Stan Drake, Bob Kane, Virgil Partch, V.T. Hamlin, and the Grandfather of all Cartoonists, Milton Caniff, one of the great
cartoonists I was privileged to meet. Another legendary cartoonist with whom I had the honor of spending some time, was Charles Schultz, the creator
of "Peanuts", probably, the most popular comic strip in the world.
A cartoonist, writer, producer, director and general all around show
biz phenomenon, with whom I have been honored to work in the more recent years, is Charles Shows, author of "Walt, Backstage Adventures with Walt Disney".
An accomplished cartoonist and writer, Charles created the award winning, "Beanie and Cecil" T.V. show and worked closely, for years with the legendary Walt Disney,
producing and directing many of his "True Life Adventures" films. When Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera established Hanna-Barbera Studios, Charles Shows was there to
help them create one of the greatest cartoon studios in history. |
