Sophia “Midge” Rosen, 92

After several weeks of declining health, Sophia “Midge” Rosen at the age of 92 died peacefully on Nov. 4, 2006, at Courtyard Health Care Center in Davis, Ca.

Al and Midge Rosen (married 56 years) moved to Desert Hot Springs in the early 70’s.  They enjoyed the wonderful weather and great entertaining with their new desert friends.  Their lives in Desert Hot Springs were very active socially and they took great pleasure going on dozens of trips and cruises around the world until Parkinson’s disease slowed her down. One of her greatest joys in her later years was the regular visits of her youngest grandchild, Kate Rosen Collini, who she “taught”, at the tender age of 4, how to make “Nana’s” cornbread and play checkers!  But it was her husband’s sudden death in 1990 that took the greatest toll on her, her family says.

When her close personal friend, Al Burdick, who had been her companion for five years, had a heart attack, her daughter, Hali, took her home where she lived with her family for 3 years until she required the full-time skilled care of a nursing home.

She is survived by her son, Martin Rosen and his wife Betsy of Ross; her daughter, Madeleine Kenefick and her husband Bill of Davis; and her daughter, Hali Rosen of Van Nuys; her grandchildren, John Rosen and his wife Brookley of Colorado, Alex Kenefick of Los Angeles and Kate Rosen-Collini of Van Nuys; and her great-grandchildren, Brandon and Layton Rosen and a new baby expected any day.

A memorial will be held on Sunday January 28th, 2007 in Laguna Woods, CA.  Interested parties are encouraged to contact Hali Rosen, at divaofdramaqueen@aol.com for information.

Donations in her name may be made to The Parkinson’s Institute, 1170 Morse Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94089-1605.

Paula Harris, 61

Born October 7, 1945 to Paul and Bernie Judkins in Los Angeles. Paula was the first of three daughters and thoroughly enjoyed her position in the family. She was raised in Westchester near LA Airport and she “didn’t  like school” but graduated from Westchester High School as well as graduating from Westchester Beauty College and became a cosmetologist, just like her Mom. Paula was married to Richard Harris for a brief time. After leaving the cosmetology business she moved to Palm Springs and entered the motel management until 1971 when she decided to try the life of a bartender. Paula bartended a brief stint in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She loved Santa Fe because it was near the state’s capitol and politicians frequented her place of work.
In 1976 Paula was back in the desert where she was a furniture refinisher, then owned a dog grooming business and finally settled into real estate. Paula joined Merrill Harris and Associates as a realtor and then became broker and owner. She renamed the company Paula Harris and Associates. Her purple signs became a familiar sight around the desert
community.
In addition to her business, Paula was very involved with her community Paula was a charter member of the Sunrise Rot
ary club, and she helped found “Citizen’s On Patrol” which is still going strong today. {aula was a proud member of the Desert Hot Springs Women’s Club, The Garden Club and a board member of Palm Springs Savings bank. The Palm Springs Association of Realtors Honored Paula as their “Outstanding Board Member” for her service as Director for 1996 and 1997.
Paula enjoyed 15 years on the board of directors for the Desert Hot Springs Boys and Girls Club. She received many accolades from her community such as Honorary Mayor in 1993, Business Person of the Year in 1988, Realtor of the year in 1993, Principal for the Day, and many, many more. I am sure many of your remember Paula bringing the circus to town riding on an elephant!
Paula facilitated numerous small businesses in Desert Hot Springs and truly enjoyed her community and family. She was a loving daughter and gained her interest in politics and community from her Dad, and interest in beauty and fashion from her Mother. She was a loving sister and aunt and she also reached the ranks of great-aunt!
Paula is survived by her life partner, Gloria and daughter Gina. Their love brought sunshine into her life. Paula and Gloria became life partners in 1998 and enjoyed each other’s love to the end. Paula and Gloria became mothers to their loving daughter Gina in 1999 and then as a family, enjoyed many travels and fun times. Gloria and Gina’s devoted love for Paula was very evident in the care Paula received through her long and tragic progression of Alzheimer’s.
Gina has asked me to share the following thoughts with you…When I first stepped off the plane, I felt the great love Paula had for me. From that moment on, my whole life changed. I had never been to a library or a museum. I had never seen a movie or eaten in  restaurant. Paula opened up a whole new world for me, she took me to the finest restaurants, first class hotels, and taught me the importance of education and community service. She was my “Auntie Mame”.  She was always with me at the doctor or the dentist, she took me to Girls Scouts and on field trips - I wouldn‘t go anywhere without her. I loved her so much that when I was five I insisted that my hair be cut just like hers. Everyone said I looked just like a little Paula Harris! I am so lucky to have had Paula as one of my Moms, she gave me a life I couldn’t even imagine and I will always love her.

Celia Rosen, 104

Desert Hot Springs ~ As reported in the Jan A 2006, Celia Rosen, of Skys Haven Mobilehome Park in Desert Hot Springs, celebrated her 104th birthday on January 1st of this year.

We sadly now must report that Mrs. Rosen passed away Sunday January 8, 2006. Since the article was just released, it is was a bit of a shock. Mrs. Rosen was a remarkable woman who worked most of her life.

Celia Kagan Rosen remembers arriving in Castel Garden, New York, in early 1923 from her native Pinsk, Russia. She was 21 years old and alone. Being a "healthy person" she was allowed to board a train which brought her to Omaha where some of her relatives lived.

She thinks "it took about three days" for the train to complete the trip to Omaha. "We arrived in Omaha about 11 p.m.," she recalled. "The train stopped and there comes a gentleman looking for Celia Kagan," she said in her Yiddish accent. He gave her a box of candy.

As she got off the train, she was greeted by her entire family. “They took me to a bungalow. The table was set and there was challah. I hadn't seen challah since before World War I. They had clothes for me and I got all dressed up just like an American!"

With a mind still "sharp as a tack," according to her son Jerry Rosen, Celia recalled the outbreak of World War I when she was a young girl in Russia. "There was a lot of shooting, " she said. "For three and a half years, we were refugees. We needed to move because of the fighting." Eventually the family ended up in Poland.

Celia's parents Basha and Yoine had four other children. One of them, Faye Kagan Wolk, the youngest in the family, lives in Toronto, Canada. The others, who are now deceased, were Katie Kagan Mednick, Jennie Kagan Klein, and Jack Kagan. Celia can remember "a teacher came to our house and taught us Hebrew and Yiddish. Everything was in Yiddish," she explained. "I went to school and learned a little bit of everything."

Celia was the first of her siblings to come to North America. She met husband Art when she lived in Omaha with her Aunt Bryna and Uncle Jake Friedman, Basha's brother. "They were very good to me, " she said. "They sent me to day school - Kellom School - for a couple of months." But Celia wanted to work so she could send money back to her family in Poland. She warned them to get out of Europe. They all did separately, just in time.

Celia and her husband Art had two daughters in addition to their son Jerry who now lives with his wife Olga in Hacienda Heights in southern California. Daughter Gloria Sinai and her husband David live in Columbus, Ohio. Another daughter, Shirley Pearlman, died in 1991.

Cecelia also has nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, some of whom have visited her at her home in Skys Haven, especially for her great birthday parties.
She spoke four languages and loved to cook her Jewish dishes. She moved into Skys Haven 25 years ago. Husband Art died just a year and a half after moving into their retirement home. Celia was a friend and a wonderful neighbor. She was loved by the residents of the park and she will be greatly missed by all.
